ABOUT US

In 1989, Second Faith Temple Church of God in Christ, located at 424 E. 49th Street, Chicago, IL, began a weekly feeding ministry in their basement to provide a hot meal to the homeless and needy. Committed to providing various services for the homeless and needy in the Chicagoland area, this ministry expanded and, in 2000, became Second Faith Temple Community Outreach, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization providing free hot meals once a week, free clothing, and emergency food baskets for those that needed them. Computer classes and tutoring sessions as requested are also available.
As the outreach ministry of Second Faith Temple Church of God In Christ, the outreach has provided help for the community distributing more than 61,000 meals to clients through the weekly feeding program. It currently has a director, two cooks, and several volunteers that serve as servers, dishwashers, kitchen helpers and cleaners for the feeding ministry. Several of the volunteers have advance college degrees in business and engineering. Five persons besides the director have also obtained the food handler’s certificate by completing a qualified food handler’s course. All of the personnel are volunteers and assist where needed with other activities of the outreach as well.
Over 360 families, as nominated by elementary schools SFT Community Outreach has partnered with, have received Thanksgiving and Christmas food and gift baskets throughout the years.
In 2008, the partnership with Geneva Scott Outreach Services allowed the outreach to provide school supplies for a back to school giveaway.
In 2024, a partnership with University of Chicago Harm Reduction Project created an avenue for the Outreach to provide Narcan and other harm reduction materials to clients to assist with addressing the opioid crisis and the prevention of drug overdose in Chicago.
